My Yellow Sofa Makeover: How I Transformed a West Elm Sofa with a Custom Slipcover

For years, I lived with a black Chesterfield sofa. And honestly? I have zero regrets about it. When you have teenagers in the house, a dark, classic sofa is basically survival instinct.

It never goes out of style, it hides everything, and — most importantly — it was incredibly comfortable. That last part made it really hard to let go.

But here’s the thing about living with a piece for years: your taste keeps evolving, even when your sofa doesn’t.

I’d always dreamed of a white sofa, but white and real life don’t exactly mix. So when my aesthetic shifted toward brighter, more joyful colors — hello, yellow — I knew it was time for a change. What I didn’t know was how I was going to pull it off.

The Yellow Sofa Makeover Idea Was Born

Last fall, the vision hit me: a yellow striped sofa. Soft, cheerful, classic with a twist. I searched everywhere for something ready-made, and came up empty. The market just wasn’t giving me what I wanted.

So I did what any furniture-obsessed person would do — I made it myself.

I snagged a West Elm sofa during their Black Friday sale (spectacular deal — do not sleep on those), with the plan to have a custom slipcover made. That’s when the real hunt began: finding the right yellow striped fabric.

Finding the Perfect Yellow Stripe Fabric

This part took longer than I expected. A yellow and white stripe? Too bold and graphic. A wider stripe? Same problem — too much contrast, too loud. I needed something with more subtlety — a stripe that whispered instead of shouted.

Then I found it: a small-scale yellow-on-yellow stripe by Brunschwig & Fils. Tonal, sophisticated, and absolutely dreamy. The moment I saw it, I knew. That was the one. Here’s my entire fabric brainstorm at that time. I changed my mind on a few of them.

Pro tip for anyone planning a custom slipcover sofa makeover: don’t rush the fabric selection. The right fabric makes or breaks the entire look.

The Custom Slipcover: Details That Make All the Difference

I reached out to my friends at Plush Fabric Home Interiors to bring the vision to life. But I didn’t want just any slipcover — I wanted it to look intentional, designed, elevated.

I’d been inspired by a Pinterest image of a sofa with a short pleated hem that showed off the legs. I couldn’t stop thinking about it. So I asked Sydney at Plush if they could recreate that look — and she absolutely delivered. She has a gift for knowing exactly the right pleat height to make it look effortlessly polished.

Then came the legs. The sofa’s original legs were a basic slanted modern wood — completely wrong for the vibe I was going for. I ordered walnut and brass legs as a replacement, and the difference is everything. Suddenly, the sofa looked like a piece with provenance. Like it had always belonged there.

Two weeks ago, it arrived. And I am completely, totally, head-over-heels in love.

Styling the Yellow Sofa: Pillows & Color Story

Now for the fun part — pillows! I have approximately one million ideas (very on-brand for me), and I know the styling will evolve. But right now I’m working with:

I’m also seriously tempted by an orange stripe pillow — the way orange and yellow play together is chef’s kiss. Stay tuned, because that may happen.

Part of a Bigger Living Room Refresh

This yellow sofa makeover is just one piece of a larger living room refresh I’ve been working on. The full reveal is coming in two weeks — and I cannot wait to show you the whole picture. Every decision has been intentional, layered, and joyful.

Because that’s really what this is about. Not just swapping out a sofa. It’s about surrounding yourself with things that make you happy every single day. The black Chesterfield served me well for a beautiful season of life. Now it’s time for a new one — and it’s going to be bright.
