Let’s face it, most of us live in spec homes—you know what I mean, the homes where every 5^th home repeats. These homes are great for many reasons: they are more affordable and we inherit great neighborhoods and schools as a by-product. But, if you are anything like me, you want a unique space—a space that is different from everyone else around you. How can you do that in a neighborhood where many of the homes look alike? Don’t despair, here’s a couple of tips for how you can get a unique look among the masses.
First, change out the light over the kitchen table. New lighting can provide the greatest bang for your buck in making your space look unique.
Sure, you can spend a lot of money on lighting, but if your budget doesn’t allow it, search for used chandeliers. The most stunning lighting feature in my home is a Craigslist find. No one has one like it!

Second, add paint to the walls. This is the easiest and cheapest way to transform a room and your space will look different by just getting rid of the neutral builder’s paint. You don’t have to go bold with the paint to get a great effect.

A nice backdrop color can make the room feel cozier. I used Sherwin Williams Tony Taupe in my living room to create that nice warm atmosphere.
Sherwin Williams Mega Greige covers the walls of my bedroom and master bath and has a hint of grey in comparison. Both of these colors are perfect for layering black, cream, white, and other bright pops of color like fuchsia or green using furniture, fabric, and art.
So, go ahead…switch out the lighting and paint. These relatively minor changes will set your home apart from the Jones’ who live next door.
