The Best Paint Colors for Chairs: How to Pick the Perfect Hue 🎨
Painting a chair is one of the easiest ways to give a space new life.
Whether you’re reworking a vintage find, refreshing your dining set, or adding a statement piece to a room, the right paint color can take your chair makeover from simple to stunning.
In this post, I’m sharing four of my all-time favorite paint colors for chairs, how to pair them with fabrics, and tips to get a beautiful, lasting finish.
Let’s dive into the magic of color!
🎨 My Favorite Paint Colors for Chairs
1. Benjamin Moore Linen White – Soft, Creamy & Timeless 🤍
This warm, milky white is a dream when you’re going for a classic or romantic look. It’s soft enough to feel inviting, but clean enough to let patterned or floral upholstery be the star.
Best for:
-
Vintage French-style chairs
-
Florals, pastels, and light-patterned fabrics
-
Bright rooms with natural light
💡 Designer Tip: Use Linen White when you want your fabric to do the talking—it creates a perfect neutral frame that doesn’t compete.
2. Behr Limousine Leather – Moody, Elegant & Sophisticated 🖤
Looking for drama? This deep black with brown undertones adds serious elegance to any chair. It’s the perfect way to create contrast with vibrant or embroidered fabrics and works beautifully in boho, eclectic, or modern spaces.
Best for:
-
Statement chairs in dining rooms or offices
-
Otomí textiles, jewel-tone velvets, or large floral prints
-
Creating contrast against light walls or natural wood
💡 Designer Tip: Pair it with brass or gold accents for a luxe, editorial look.
3. Naval by Sherwin-Williams – Bold, Classic & Versatile 💙
Naval is a deep navy that walks the line between bold and neutral. It’s strong enough to ground bright upholstery but still soft enough to mix easily with other colors. It looks gorgeous on mismatched dining chairs or as a single standout piece.
Best for:
-
Boho or globally inspired chairs
-
Colorful fabric mixes
-
Pairing with rustic woods or metallics
💡 Designer Tip: Use Naval to unify a set of mismatched chairs—just paint them all the same blue and use different fabrics on each seat for a curated yet playful look.
4. Verbena by Sherwin-Williams – Soft, Romantic & Unexpected 💗
This light pink-lavender hue is perfect for those who love feminine, playful, and unexpected color. It’s soft without being washed out and pairs beautifully with florals, green pinstripes, or painterly prints.
Best for:
-
Entryway accent chairs
-
Romantic or cottage-style spaces
-
Bold floral or whimsical upholstery
💡 Designer Tip: Verbena looks stunning with whitewashed woods or garden-inspired interiors. It’s a color that whispers joy.
🧵 How to Match Paint with Fabric
Choosing a paint color should always consider your fabric (especially if it has pattern or color). Here are a few guidelines to help you find the perfect match:
✅ Matching Tips:
-
Bold fabric = Neutral paint. Let the fabric shine by using whites, creams, or soft pinks.
-
Neutral fabric = Bold paint. Go moody or bright to make the chair stand out.
-
Tie it together. Pull a color directly from the fabric pattern for a harmonious look.
💡 Always view your fabric and paint swatch together in natural light before committing!

🪑 How to Get the Perfect Painted Finish
A beautiful color deserves a beautiful finish! Here’s how to make sure your paint job looks amazing and lasts:
✔ Surface Prep
-
Clean the chair thoroughly. Clean Slate by Amy Howard is a very highly rated product for this.
-
Lightly sand glossy surfaces for better paint adhesion or use Bonding Boss by Dixie Belle.
✔ Use a Great Brush
-
I hate it when my brush sheds, so I invest in Purdy brushes. I typically use 1 or 1.5 inch brushes and as long as I clean them, they last forever. (I have used both straight and angled and I like both.)
✔ Prime (if needed)
-
Use a primer if painting over dark wood or going from dark to light. I’ve heard Zinsser spray primer works great for chairs with dark finishes that can potentially bleed through.
✔ Choose the Right Sheen
-
Satin or semi-gloss is best for chairs—easy to clean and adds a slight sheen. I personally love Benjamin Moore Advance and Sherwin Williams Emerald paints.
-
Chalk or mineral paint is great for a vintage look (don’t forget to seal it!). I love Amy Howard One Step, Dixie Belle, and Fusion mineral paints.
