Floral Fabric Trends: How to Pick the Right Pattern for Your Chairs 🌸🪑

There’s just something about floral fabric that brings instant joy to a space. Whether you love soft romantic roses, bold painterly blooms, or vintage garden-inspired prints, florals have become a go-to trend in chair design—and for good reason.

But picking the right floral for your chairs isn’t always as easy as it looks.

In today’s blog, I’m walking you through exactly how I choose floral fabrics for chairs—from understanding the room’s existing palette to mixing patterns like a pro. I’m also giving you a behind-the-scenes look at a project I’m currently working on for a client where floral fabric is the starting point for a whole design story.

🌼 Why Florals Are Trending (and Here to Stay)

Floral fabrics have made a serious comeback—and they’re more versatile than ever. From traditional chintz to bold, modern botanicals, there’s a floral for every design style.

Current trends I’m loving: (tap on each one to see more)

  • Large-scale painterly florals with loose, organic lines

  • Vintage-style florals for that charming, English cottage feel

  • Graphic, high-contrast florals that feel modern and bold

Floral prints are great hero fabrics—they make a statement, tie together colors in a room, and give your space personality.

🎯 How I Pick the Right Floral for a Chair Makeover

Right now, I’m working on a custom set of statement chairs for a client. The first step in this process? Finding the right floral fabric—one that not only turns heads, but also fits seamlessly into the client’s existing space.

Here’s my step-by-step process:

Step 1: Start with the Room’s Existing Elements

Before I even begin shopping for fabric, I take a close look at what’s already in the space:

  • Paint colors

  • Wallpaper patterns

  • Existing upholstery

  • Rugs, art, and accessories

In this case, my client had a few strong colors and patterns adjacent to the room, so I needed a floral that could act as the bridge between what’s there and the new chair design.

Step 2: Find the “Hero” Floral Fabric

Once I know the room’s palette, I look for that one show-stopping floral print that will lead the entire design. I call this the hero fabric—it’s the one that will appear front and center on the chairs and set the tone for the rest of the pattern mix.

Floral fabric is the hero fabric and buffalo check in pink, graphic blue fabric, and wallpaper sample.

💡 Pro Tip: Look for a floral that includes at least 3–4 different colors. This gives you options when it comes to pulling in coordinating patterns.  This one is Secret Garden by Vervain.

Step 3: Pull Coordinating Patterns From the Floral

My client loves a good check. So buffalo check in different colors will be my starting point.  Remember, I’m always using colors found within that floral. To add a red or any other color outside of the colors found in the floral wouldn’t work.

Hero fabric as the floral fabric and various buffalo check fabrics that coordinate in yellow, green, turquoise, pinks, and cornflower blue.

For this client, I’m pairing the floral with one bold geometric pattern (in colors pulled directly from the floral). It’s all about balance: color, contrast, and cohesion. Once I decide on these fabrics, then I’ll add in other coordinating patterns in various scales; typically with a single color and a white background.

Step 4: Consider the Chair Style

Some florals look better on certain frames:

  • Large-scale florals are always a good idea on any frame

  • Smaller patterns or stripes are ideal for carved frames with a cottage look

  • Floral backs with solid seats can create a designer, intentional look

This is where the fun happens—placing florals in just the right way to highlight the best parts of the frame and fabric.

Here are the chairs I’ll be using for this project; the cane will be removed and upholstered.
