DIY Ugly Chair Makeover | How I Transformed an Old Chair with Pink Paint & Indian Block Prints
Looking for a DIY chair makeover that brings color and personality into your home? In this post, I’ll show you how I transformed an old, outdated chair into a whimsical statement piece with pale pink paint and Indian block print upholstery. Whether you’re tackling your first chair flip or looking for inspiration for your next upholstery project, this step-by-step makeover will show you how to bring new life to old furniture!

The ‘Before’ – How to Transform an Old Chair with DIY Upholstery
I found this chair looking classic but uninspiring—aged gold leaf, neutral fabric, and just… boring. While it had great bones, it was in desperate need of color, pattern, and personality.
I love giving old chairs new life, and this one was a perfect candidate for transformation. My vision? A soft, feminine look that balanced delicate charm with bold, global-inspired prints. But to be clear, I had lots of choices of all different types of fabrics, the key was picking the right ones for this project.

Step 1: Best Paint for Chairs – Why I Chose Soft Pink
The first step was refreshing the frame with a beautiful, pale pink paint. I used Sherwin Williams Verbena. This soft hue would act as the perfect base to contrast with the bold fabric I had in mind.
Why Pink?
Soft pink is a great choice for furniture because it:
✔️ Adds warmth and whimsy
✔️ Pairs beautifully with vibrant patterns
✔️ Feels modern and fresh, yet timeless

Painting Tip: If you’re giving an old chair a makeover, always start with a light sanding to smooth out imperfections. You can also start with a base coat paint like Dixie Belle Bonding Boss. Then, apply thin coats of paint for an even, professional finish.
Step 2: How to Reupholster a Chair with Indian Block Prints
Now, onto my favorite part—choosing the fabric! I wanted something that would truly pop against the soft pink, so I selected a stunning Indian block print fabric in bold red and pink hues.

🔹 Why Indian block prints? These traditional, hand-stamped textiles bring a unique, artisan touch to furniture. The intricate details add warmth and character, making each piece feel one-of-a-kind.
I chose Thibaut Indian Panel for the top, Schumacher Luna Hand Block Print for the seat, and Schumacher Studio Bon Cosmos for the arms and backside.

Once I had my fabric, I carefully upholstered the chair’s seat, making sure the pattern was centered and symmetrical.

DIY Upholstery Tip: If you’re reupholstering a chair seat, and find that it has wrinkles, use a wrinkle release spray on the seat after upholstering for a polished look!

Step 3: DIY Chair Makeover Reveal – Before & After!
After the final touches, I stepped back to admire the transformation, and WOW—this chair had completely come to life! The soft pink frame and bold, patterned fabric created the perfect mix of playful and sophisticated.
💡 Style Idea: This chair would be perfect in a colorful kitchen, a cozy reading nook, or as an accent piece in a creative workspace. For now, it’s going in my spare bedroom!
