A Creative Fireplace Makeover

I have an enormous bedroom which contains a fireplace. This fireplace will never be used because I live in Texas and my bedroom is on the second floor—heat rises. It’s not necessary, but here it sits anyway. In the past couple of years I have started to layer art on my mantles…a look I really like. Right now I have a piece from Wayfair I bought several years ago (the big flower), a piece of art from Minted (the framed abstract), and an original by Carrie Schmitt (the big one).

But the real problem I have is what to put with those layered art pieces? I knew there was something off, but didn’t know what to do. I messaged my good friend Jill Kalman, who is an interior designer, and asked her what I should do to fix it. You can watch her response on my latest YouTube video by clicking here. The picture below is what I originally sent her.

She had me remove the gray corbel and add in a pink ginger jar that I had in my dining room. The thing I didn’t expect was her input on my hearth. She gave me a couple of options because the buoys were in competition with the items on the mantle. One idea was to fill the hearth with colorful books.

Jill’s Idea

Another idea was to use birch logs and paint the ends.

Jill’s Idea

I chose the logs since I knew I could order those on Amazon. I bought 3 boxes of these to fill my hearth, and it was the perfect amount. So, I took everything off except the layered art and started anew.

Then I added in the pieces Jill suggested. They worked really great, which just proves you can shop your own house to find great items. (And don’t be afraid to paint accessories to make them work!)

Next, I began layering the logs in the fireplace, painting them with various colors that I already had on hand.

I chose that one since I knew I could order those on Amazon. I bought 3 boxes of these to fill my hearth, and it was the perfect amount.

The painting of each log took literally a few minutes. It was super easy and I used all kinds of paints!

Then I brought in my blue tool box to put underneath as well as a yellow basked Jill had suggested I try. I ended up scooting that yellow box over. Of course I had to add in a chair! The only thing I bought new were the logs. Everything else was shopped from my house. Now, that’s a deal! And I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out.

If you didn’t know, Jill has an accessorizing online course. I bought it last year and it gave me so many ideas for styling my own home. It’s only $47!!! Click here to check it out!

You can watch the entire YouTube video by clicking here. I was only looking for mantle help, but my entire fireplace got an entire makeover. I can’t stop smiling every time I see it. What’s your favorite part? I have to say, it’s the logs for me!
