Historic Yellow House Makeover | How I Chose the Perfect Cheerful Paint Colors

It’s amazing what a little paint (okay, a lot of paint) can do to breathe new life into a home. Our house had worn its creamy exterior for more than 20 years, and while it had a certain vintage charm, it was definitely showing its age. I knew it was time for a refresh—and this Hawthorne Yellow house makeover turned out even more cheerful than I imagined.

The black hardware—numbers, mailbox, and outdoor sconces—were all original to the house, quietly whispering that it was time for a change. After years of loving that soft neutral, I knew I was ready for color—something that would make the house smile every time I pulled into the driveway.

Choosing the Perfect Shade for My Hawthorne Yellow House Makeover ☀️

I went through so many shades of yellow trying to find the right one. Some were too bold, others too pale. I wanted a hue that felt cheerful yet classic.

Finally, I landed on Hawthorne Yellow by Benjamin Moore, one of their historic paint colors. It’s the lightest of the samples I tested, but on the house, it radiates the perfect sunny glow without being overwhelming. The moment that first coat went up, I knew: this was the one.house showing cream paint on one side and yellow on the other

We’ve had the red striped awning for a few years, which I really love against the yellow now.

A Pop of Heritage Red ❤️

The front door needed its own statement moment (it had been painted a pinky-red), so I painted it Heritage Red by Benjamin Moore—a true, confident red that anchors all that happy yellow…another historic color.

I cleaned and repainted my little bistro set in a crisp white, then topped the chairs with new gingham oilcloth seats that feel like a sweet nod to vintage picnic charm.

For the porch, I added a new swing since the old one had rotted through. I painted it a darker yellow—Honey Dijon by Clarke & Kensington, a playful contrast to the lighter yellow siding—and I spray-painted a pair of metal stools that pick up the new Annie Selke red-striped indoor-outdoor rug. It’s a cozy spot now, bursting with color and personality.

Small Details, Big Difference ✨

The old black sconces were replaced with whimsical brass fixtures, giving everything a warm, welcoming glow in the evenings. I almost painted them green to add another accent color, but once I saw how the brass shimmered against the Hawthorne Yellow siding, I knew they were perfect just as they were.

The house numbers and mailbox also got a refresh, keeping with that timeless brass finish for a polished look. Every little change makes the house feel both fresh.  I also found a cute oversized doormat that was perfect!  The wreath I had purchased several years ago and it’s still looking great!

The Back Porch: A Playful Twist 🍏

The back porch got its own dose of whimsy! After years of plain doors, I finally gave the French doors a splash of color—Kiwi by Benjamin Moore. It’s such a lively green that ties beautifully into the plants and accents around the porch.

I also painted the iron table in the same Kiwi color and the chairs a soft yellow to coordinate with the house.

The two brass sconces out here did get my green treatment, and I absolutely love the whimsical touch they add.

With the Annie Selke multicolored striped rug, the space feels playful and joyful—exactly the vibe I wanted for a back porch meant for relaxing and gathering.

A Home That Feels Like Sunshine ☀️💛

After all these updates, our home feels like it’s smiling again. The combination of Hawthorne Yellow, Heritage Red, Kiwi Green, and brass accents gives it so much personality while staying true to its historic charm. Every time I walk up the steps or sit on the swing with a cup of coffee, I can’t help but feel joy.

Sometimes, the best kind of transformation isn’t about doing something completely new—it’s about bringing what you already love back to life in a brighter, happier way.
