7 Game-Changing Items for the Closet of Your Dreams

Just a little over a year ago, I did a closet makeover. It was a long time coming. (You can read that entire blog post here.)

I hated going in my closet because it had no style and was clutter with junk we had saved for years. But after scrolling Pinterest and saving tons of pins, I got inspired to do something about it. And after living with it my beautiful makeover closet for an entire year, I can wholeheartedly tell you the top things every closet needs to take it from drab to fab. With just a few key pieces, you can turn your closet into a beautiful, inviting space.

This picture from Pinterest gave me the inspiration to go for it!

Here are my top 7 items you need to make your closet look stunning.

1. A Beautiful Chandelier: Elevate the Atmosphere

Nothing says luxury like a gorgeous chandelier hanging from the ceiling. I found this one at the Round Top Flea Market on the last day and got it at a discount. It instantly elevated the space, providing both style and functional lighting. Whether you love crystal chandeliers for a touch of glamour or a modern piece for a contemporary look, a chandelier is a must have and will make your closet feel elegant and sophisticated.

2. Stylish Storage Solutions: Keep Clutter at Bay

One secret to a stunning closet is keeping it clutter-free and boy, did my old closet have the junk and clutter. I used stylish storage solutions, such as a beautiful shoe cabinet, to elevate the closet to luxury and it also stored my cute shoes. I’m so glad I did this!

I also added decorative boxes to store all my keepsakes including pictures of my kids when they were little, old birthday cards, a few pieces of clothing I wanted to save, and magazines I’ve been featured in.

I used both banker’s boxes and fabric storage boxes that add texture as well as transparent containers with my sweaters so I can see what I have at a glance.

Keeping everything neatly stored away makes my closet look stunning but also easier for me to find what I need.

3. A Gorgeous Dresser: The Perfect Focal Point

Turn your favorite dresser into a piece of art. I decided to get a pink painted 4-drawer dresser to tuck in under some of my preexisting Elfa shelving. It’s perfect for what I need for my socks, workout clothes, pajamas and other small items.

Displaying a beautiful dresser has elevated my closet to look more like a boutique than a storage space.

Within that dresser I got some storage for all my earrings and other jewelry. It’s so easy to find my earrings and pick out what I need at a glance.  I also bought some adjustable bamboo drawer separators to keep things inside my drawers organized. I’m so glad I did this; I feel so much more organized and together.

4. A Colorful Rug: Add Personality and Comfort

A colorful rug is a great way to bring warmth and personality to your closet. I’m a big fan of Annie Selke and they have amazing colorful rugs. The one I have here in my closet is from Annie Selke. Whether you choose a bold pattern or a soft, neutral shade, a rug can transform the floor of your closet from bare and cold to a cozy and inviting surface, even if you are layering it over carpet like I did. Not only does it make the space more comfortable, but it also adds visual interest, tying the different elements of your closet together. Opt for a rug that complements your wardrobe palette and chandelier for a cohesive look that makes your closet feel complete.

5. Uniform Hangers: Create a Polished Look

Uniform hangers are a small detail that makes a huge difference. Ditch the mismatched plastic and wire hangers, and invest in high-quality hangers that look elegant and keep your clothes in their best shape. I got these pink velvet slim hangers on Amazon and have never looked back. Whether you prefer velvet, wood, or acrylic, choosing a consistent style will create a polished, organized appearance that makes your closet look neat and stunning. Velvet hangers are great for saving space, while wooden hangers add a classic touch—either way, matching hangers bring a sense of luxury to your wardrobe.

6. Wallpaper: Add Character and Charm

One of the easiest ways to make a statement in your closet is by adding wallpaper. A bold pattern or soft texture can bring depth and character to the space. I say the busier the wallpaper, the better in a small space.

And the fact that I would layer a painted shoe closet in front of it made me also go really bold. I fell in love with this pink hummingbird wallpaper and knew it was right for me.   Then, choosing the plaid print for the cabinet was a no-brainer to add in layers of pattern mixing.

But whether you choose a floral print, geometric design, or a sophisticated texture, wallpaper can serve as an unexpected backdrop for your clothing and accessories. This element adds visual interest and can even create a sense of escape—a little retreat where you can enjoy getting dressed.

7. Small Comfortable Seating

Because I’m Chair Whimsy, I firmly believe every closet needs a small chair or stylish stool. It’s perfect for sitting down to put on your shoes or laying out your clothes as you plan for your outfit of the day. I happen to have a great stool covered in Carrie Schmitt fabric. I can pull it out or tuck it out of the way under my dresses. It adds both comfort and style to my closet and I don’t know what I would do without it.

Creating a beautiful closet is all about combining functionality with style. By adding a gorgeous chandelier, including a pretty dresser, incorporating a colorful rug, using uniform slim hangers, investing in stylish storage solutions, adding wallpaper and a stool or chair, you can transform your closet into a space that feels luxurious, organized, and uniquely you. With these seven items, your closet will become a sanctuary where getting dressed is a delightful experience every day…and you did it with just a little elbow grease and on a budget.

I get asked all the time where I get my clothes. I shop at various places that carry colorful clothes and I have some of my favorite new picks on my Like To Know It shop. You can check them out by clicking here.
