A Chair to Honor My Dad

It’s been 13 years and counting. My dad passed away somewhat suddenly after being a very active man. The last few days of his life we turned to hospice so we could bring our dad home where he wanted to be. Up to this point, I had no experience or contact with a hospice organization—death was a scary topic that I didn’t care to entertain. But the fact is, it comes to all of us eventually. And looking back, I am so grateful for hospice. Sure, it’s still painful after all these years to look back on those events, but because of this organization I do have some comfort in knowing that we were able to give my dad his last wish—being at home. My brother and I were prepared to do whatever we needed to take care of him, but after an initial evaluation, the hospice nurses said they would be there 24 hours a day. And, they were amazing in their care not only for my dad, but for us. People who devote their lives to this type of service are simply amazing. The nurses are a huge part of this, but it takes a village to run hospice organizations from office staff to counselors and educators.

Every year for the past four years I’ve donated a chair to the annual Hospice Austin’s Beauty of Life charity auction event. This year is no different. And as I’ve selected the frame, fabric, and finish of my chair, I’ve reflected on my dad. He would never have believed I’ve made a career change like this one. But he were still alive, he would be my biggest cheerleader.   Continue reading “A Chair to Honor My Dad”

Fabulous Fabrics for a Color Filled Home

Do you have a home that can handle lots of color? Well, my latest clients do! And from the pictures they showed me of their previous home, they were not afraid of color either.  They expressed a desire to have a variety of different bright colored fabrics that would include a stripe. I knew exactly the fabrics I would be selecting to show my clients…a chic, colorful pallet created by Dana Gibson

Frazadas: One of my Newest Faves

I’m always on the hunt for new fabrics that I can use for upholstery. “Normal” individuals go into a store and appreciate the tablecloths, skirts, and rugs on display. But evidently, I’m not normal. When I go into a store, my mind automatically goes into high gear thinking about how I could use these textiles on chairs. Often, I don’t have any specific chairs or projects in mind. I am merely just attracted to the vibrant colors and rich textures.  Continue reading “Frazadas: One of my Newest Faves”

Vegas Goes Boho

What do you do when a potential client wants a set of chairs for one of the biggest clothing and accessory trade shows in Las Vegas? You say YES! That’s exactly what happened last month. The initial request was for 6 chairs to dress up a clothing company called Boho Jane. As the name suggests, the client wanted a bohemian look to compliment their clothing line. Now, I could have just done a set of 6 matching chairs, but how boring is that?  So instead, I suggested that I do two different sets of two chairs (one set of arm chairs and the other a set of armless chairs) along with a settee. Here’s how it all began…

Kate Spade Strikes Again

Some day, when I really make it in this world, I’m going to only buy Kate Spade apparel. I love that line of clothing so much, so you can understand why I love her fabric line, too. It’s playful and fresh, and yet, still very grown up. Just a few months ago I blogged about this chair makeover using her linen and chenille dot fabric.  Well, Kate Spade strikes again. And this time it’s a black and white animal print on a large scale.

How an Unassuming Pink Chair Helped Define a Tight Space

I need to stay away from antique malls. I really do. I always find something that I can’t resist. Actually, I do resist buying stuff. (You wouldn’t believe this if you saw my garage…never mind that, though). I rarely buy things when I first see them. Instead, I go home and if I can’t stop thinking about it for a week, I go back praying that it’s still there. Well, I saw this chair and I couldn’t stop thinking about it.

The Case for the 10-Minute Chair

You may be wondering, what exactly is a 10-minute chair? I heard this phrase for the first time just a few months ago. And my first response was, What in the world is a 10-minute chair?  It basically refers to how long you can sit in a chair comfortably. You might be wondering, if we could only survive 10 minutes in a chair, why would anyone bother with it? Continue reading “The Case for the 10-Minute Chair”
