I’m a Sucker for an Old Settee

I admit it, I’m a sucker for a settee. French settees in particular are amongst my favorites.  I’ve got an amazing one at my kitchen table that I’ll probably never part with. Just a few months ago I snagged this one on Craigslist. It had two amazing chairs that I’ll be redoing for a client soon, but this little preppy guy was in bad need of a makeover. Here’s how I did it.

It Really Is Better to Give Than to Receive

We’ve all heard the saying, “It’s better to give than to receive.” I’m not sure that I really believed that as a kid, though. But now that I’m adult, I know this to be true. A few weeks ago I read an article in the local newspaper about a refugee family who had relocated to the Austin area from Syria. Multiple times, their neighborhood had been the target of bombing.  And, each time, their home was completely destroyed. I can’t even fathom what would it be like to have to start over with nothing but what others give out of the goodness of their hearts.

When I saw a picture of the kids sitting around a coffee table in mismatched office chairs while they ate, I knew I had to step up and help. And so, I went to work designing something joyful and happy for this family of seven.   Continue reading “It Really Is Better to Give Than to Receive”

How to Break Free from Grey: Color is the New Black

Many of us have enjoyed the “grey & beige train” for several years now. I admit it…I’ve had beige and grey walls in my house to warm it up. And I’ve even used grey fabrics primarily because I liked them. But every few years I get the itch to change everything up and get a different look. You might have read my previous blog about my entryway and stairwell where the walls went from a golden yellow to pale pink. Well, a few weeks ago I painted over the beige walls in my living room. Bye bye beige! It had a good run.

Frazadas: One of my Newest Faves

I’m always on the hunt for new fabrics that I can use for upholstery. “Normal” individuals go into a store and appreciate the tablecloths, skirts, and rugs on display. But evidently, I’m not normal. When I go into a store, my mind automatically goes into high gear thinking about how I could use these textiles on chairs. Often, I don’t have any specific chairs or projects in mind. I am merely just attracted to the vibrant colors and rich textures.  Continue reading “Frazadas: One of my Newest Faves”

Vegas Goes Boho

What do you do when a potential client wants a set of chairs for one of the biggest clothing and accessory trade shows in Las Vegas? You say YES! That’s exactly what happened last month. The initial request was for 6 chairs to dress up a clothing company called Boho Jane. As the name suggests, the client wanted a bohemian look to compliment their clothing line. Now, I could have just done a set of 6 matching chairs, but how boring is that?  So instead, I suggested that I do two different sets of two chairs (one set of arm chairs and the other a set of armless chairs) along with a settee. Here’s how it all began…

What Happens When a French Settee Goes Boho

I admit it…I love French settees. And anytime I see one that I can afford, I buy it. You never can have too many settees in my opinion. (Read about my love of settees  here.) I found this one a few years ago and it’s been waiting for a makeover. Well, it’s day finally came. A client approached me needing a few different pieces for a special project. (You’ll hear more about this project in another blog next month.) I suggested using this settee and she agreed! Off with the peach fabric!
