Chair Whimsy is Growing!

I’ve been holding it in for a while!  But there’s no denying that Chair Whimsy is growing… in a few different ways. Many of you might already know that my workshop is in my backyard.

I had it built four years ago. It’s been a great, inspiring space to work, but I’ve outgrown it.

I entertained the idea of renting a space, but it’s so easy being at home…especially when you have these two little guys (Zeus and Nike) to look after all day.

Then, I looked into converting my garage space, but it’s expensive to insulate and heat/air condition.  And, right now it stores all my chairs. I finally settled on expanding my workshop right where it is. I had enough space to the left of the shop to make that happen. We took out a dying peach tree and the spot opened up.

The workers arrived Monday morning. I ordered a window on Ebay (you can see it in the picture above) and I already had a cute door…because you know, it matters how it looks!  I sketched out on graph paper to get the right placement of the door and window.

I wanted the new building to look like an addition, not a double wide trailer add-on. So, I had the building set it back about 10 inches…just enough so that I don’t encroach on the easement. And, I had the roof dropped down. My original building is a cedar shingle, but this one will be a metal roof—all in keeping with the addition-small-village-look.  I’ve got a ridge cresting on its way!  That will go on once it arrives. And here’s the progress after two days. What a difference, right?

The workers will cut a hole so that my original shop will open up to the other space.

They still need to install the roof, finish up trim, and paint it.  Can you guess what color it will be?  It will be different from my other one.

Right now it’s just a shell, but I’ve got design ideas for the interiors. Stay tuned for those!  What would you do if this was your space? I want to know!!!  Any fun creative suggestions are certainly welcome…post them in the comments.
